Olika sorters vals
Det
finns tre olika sorters vals i Sverige. Den vanligaste och folkligaste,
är gammalvals. Den har mest gemensamt med wienervals vad gäller turer,
medan wienervals och modern vals är mer lika i stil och grundsteg. Den
moderna valsen är den långsammaste medan gammalvalsen oftast något
långsammare än den snabba wienervalsen. I skolans dansundervisning och på dansbanor
är det oftast gammalvals som dansas, medan wienervals är vanligast som
bröllopsvals.

Different kinds
of Waltz
There
are three different kinds of waltz in Sweden. The most common and
popular, is the Old-time or Traditional waltz. This waltz has most in
common with Viennese waltz when it comes to the figures, but on the
other hand Viennese waltz and Modern waltz are more alike in style
and basic steps. The Modern waltz is the slowest while the Old-time
waltz
is usually slower than the quick Viennese waltz. In dance education at
schools and on
dance floors the Old-time waltz is the most common, while the Viennese
waltz is most common as Wedding waltz.

Wienervalsens
historia
Wienervalsen
utvecklades ur den folkliga valsen under slutet av 1700- och början av
1800-talet och skiljer sig från denna framför allt när det gäller tempo
och stil. Den lokala varianten av folklig vals i Wien började dansas
till valser av bl.a. Strauss och anpassades då till musikens lite
snabbare tempo. En dansstil med mer glidande steg och utan den
långsamma valsens upp- och nergångar utvecklades. Den eleganta stilen
fick sin utformning under 1950-talet då hållning, fattning och dansstil
lånades från den engelska valsen och dansen blev kort därefter en
tävlingsdans. I denna form är wienervalsen internationell och har
enligt regelboken bara tre möjliga turer förutom grundstegen:
högervändning, vänstervändning och fleckerln (rotation på stället).
Trots detta har wienervalsen länge varit förbehållet tävlingsdansens
översta nivåer. Wienervalsen har också fått en amerikansk variant
som är friare i stilen och som tillåter fler figurer. I Österrike har
wienervalsen blivit en nationaldans som fortfarande är obligatorisk på
baler och tillställningar. Även här bjuder traditionen att dansdelen av
en bal inleds med wienervals.

The History of
the Viennese waltz
Viennese
waltz was developed from the popular waltz in the late 1700s and the
early
1800s and differs from this in particular when it comes to the
pace and
style. The
local version of the popular waltz in Vienna began to be danced to
waltzes by, inter alia, Strauss
and was adapted to the music's faster tempo. A
dance style with more gliding steps and without the rise-and fall in
slow waltz was developed. The
elegant style got its form in the 1950s when the posture, hold
and dance style was borrowed from the English waltz and the
dance was soon after made into a competition dance. In
this form the Viennese waltz is international and has according to the
rule book only three possible figures except for the basic steps: natural
turn, reverse turn and fleckerln (rotation in place). Despite
this, the Viennese waltz has long been reserved for the upper
levels in the
dance competition system . The Viennese waltz has also gotten an
American version which is freer in style and which allows more figures.
In Austria the Viennese waltz has become a national dance which still
is indispensable on balls and big events. Also here the tradition calls
for the dancing part of a ball to be introduced by Viennese waltz.

Karaktären
i wienervals
Liksom den moderna valsen är
wienervals en mycket
elegant dans och passar bra som uppvisningsdans och på finare
tillställningar som baler och bröllop. Den går bra att dansa socialt,
men kräver lite mer golvyta än många andra danser. Karaktären i dansen
har samma vågrörelse som i modern vals, men i stället för att gå upp på tå markerar man det genom en betonad etta och genom att
sträcka upp kroppen. Man roterar genom hela dansen och använder
grundsteg främst för att byta håll. Svårigheten i dansen ligger främst
i att det snabba tempot kräver en mycket god dansteknik. Fattningen är
samma som i moderna vals och kan sägas vara en lite elegantare version
av foxtrotfattningen. Det korrekta tävlingstempot ligger på 59-60 bpm
(takter per minut), vilket är dubbelt så snabbt som modern vals. När
wienervals dansas på bröllop och liknande väljer man dock oftare
långsammare musik.

The Character of
Viennese waltz
Like
the Modern waltz the Viennese waltz is a very elegant dance and is well
suited for dance performances and fancy events as balls and
weddings. It
also works for social dancing, but requires a little more floor space
than many other dances. The
character of the dance has the same wave-action as the Modern waltz,
but instead of rise-and-fall in the feet, the character is
marked by emphasizing the beat in the measure and by
stretching the body. You rotate
through all the dance and use basic steps mostly for switching
direction. The
difficulty of the dance lies mainly in that the fast pace
requires a very good dance technique. The
hold is the same as in the Modern waltz and can be said to be a bit
more elegant version of the Foxtrot hold. The
correct pace for competitions is 59-60 bpm (beats per minute), which is
twice as fast as for the Modern waltz. When
the Viennese waltz is danced at weddings and similar events, however,
many choose to dance to slower music.
